About Japanese animation.

Anime, sometimes misspelled as "anima", is the Japanese word for animation.

Japanese media features anime of films, television shows and OVA (Original Video Animation). Anime is available in nearly every genre and range from the silly to the serious. Though a cartoon, anime is not necessarily intended for children or any specific age group. Anime films make up one-third of the box office earnings in Japan.

Anime characters typically have large, saucer-like eyes are a striking and common feature of anime characters. Scientists who have studied the phenomenon of what constitutes beauty and what is considered appealing have identified high cheek bones, white teeth, a white sclera (area around the iris of the eye), and long legs as being features that are generally found to be attractive. Anime characters have all of these.

There are more than ten genres of anime, named for the primarily style of characters or its target audience. Anime examples:
Moe – anime that features characters that are especially perky or cute
Super Sentai – Japanese for “taskforce” refers to any show that involves a super hero team.
Seinen – anime targeted at young adults
Mecha – anime featuring target giant robots

Fans of anime can visit the Ghibli Museum, founded by anime pioneer Miyazaki's Ghibli. Located in Mitaka, in the greater Tokyo area, not only shows the films of Miyazaki and other animators but also has replicas of objects and characters from the films on display. The design of the facility itself incorporates motifs from popular animated films. Participants in the anime tour also get to attend comic-book fairs, animation fairs and other special events.

Anime consumers can also find anime merchandise stores in Tokyo's Akihabara district. Akihabara is known for its electronics but it has a growing availability of anime products.
