Japan, located in Eastern Asia, is an island chain east of the Korean Peninsula between the North Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan.

Japan covers an area of 377,835 square kilometers. Of which, 374,744 square kilometers is land while 3,091 square kilometers is water. The terrain is mostly mountainous and is surrounded by 29,751 kilometers of rugged coastline with no natural land boundaries.

Japan’s lowest point is Hachiro-gata at -4 m, and its highest point is Mount Fuji rising 3,776 meters above sea level. With numerous dormant and some active volcanoes, Japan experiences about 1,500 seismic occurrences (mostly tremors) every year. Other natural hazards include tsunamis and typhoons.

With an area slightly smaller than the state of California, Japan has few mineral resources. Its greatest natural resource is fish. As of 2001, Japan had an estimated 12% arable land with about 1% used for permanent crops. As of 1998, Japan had an estimated 26,790 sq km of irrigated land.
