Foods in Japan: A treat for the senses.

Foods in Japan reflect that fact that it is an island country. No matter where you go, you'll find plenty of fish and other marine products on the menu. Furthermore, Japan is blessed with a perfect climate for growing rice. Therefore, the typical Japanese diet consists of rice as the focus, accompanied by fish and vegetables.

The main seasoning for foods in Japan is called "shoyu". This liquid is frequently called soy sauce in the West. Another common seasoning in Japanese dishes is a paste called "miso". Both of these seasonings are made from fermented soybeans combined with salt and rice.

Meals are served 3 times a day. Sitting down for a meal you can expect rice, a bowl of soup and two or three side dishes. At the end of the meal, you can expect to be served with a steaming cup of green tea.
