What is the Hokkaido Rail Pass?
The Hokkaido Rail Pass is a discount pass for train travel in Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. It is designed for foreign tourists and offers unlimited travel on JR Hokkaido trains, including limited express and local trains, for a set number of days.
With the Hokkaido Rail Pass, travelers can easily explore the island and visit popular destinations like Sapporo, Hakodate, and Asahikawa or even head into the wonderful wilderness of Eastern Hokkaido.
The Hokkaido Rail Pass can be purchased outside of Japan or through JR East online within Japan at a higher price. It is a great way to save money on transportation during your trip to Hokkaido.
Types of Hokkaido Rail Passes
The Hokkaido Rail Pass is available in two types: the 5-day pass and the 7-day pass. The 5-day pass is valid for 5 consecutive days, while the 7-day pass is valid for 7 consecutive days. Both passes are designed for unlimited travel on JR Hokkaido trains, including limited express and local trains, and include some bus routes and the JR ferry to and from Aomori.

How to Purchase the Hokkaido Rail Pass
In the past, the Hokkaido Rail Pass could only be purchased outside of Japan. But recently it has become available inside Japan which is why you might read some conflicting information online.
It is now available in Japan from JR East online at a higher price.
You can purchase it through authorized sales agents, such as travel agencies or online resellers. It is important to note that you must obtain an exchange order before you arrive in Japan, and then exchange it for the actual pass at a JR Hokkaido station once you arrive. The exchange order is valid for three months from the date of issue, so it is important to plan accordingly.

Using the Hokkaido Rail Pass
Once you have exchanged your exchange order for the actual pass, you can start using it on any JR Hokkaido train.
In the past, you would show your pass to the station attendant when entering and exiting the station, and you were allowed to pass through the gates. However, now you will receive a standard-size ticket that you can put into the gate the same as a standard ticket.
Insert the correct ticket:
Note: When making a reservation you will receive an additional ticket. Don’t put this into the gate. You only need to insert your JR Hokkaido rail pass ticket. There reserved seat ticket is to show to the conductor upon request.
This can be a bit confusing at first because they both look similar. I like to put each in separate parts of my wallet so I can easily whip the right one out when needed.
Tip: And one more thing. Don’t forget to take your pass when you exit the gate!
How To Reserve Seats
For most shorter trips, you won’t need to reserve seats. For example, on my last trip, I reserved 3 out of the many trips I took.
But for longer trips, such as up to Asahikawa or Wakkanai or between Hakodate and Sapporo it’s better to reserve.
If you plan to use a reserved seat, it’s important to obtain your reserved seat tickets before boarding. Please note that seats cannot be reserved onboard the train. If you need to change your train after receiving a reserved seat ticket, you can do so at the ticket counter.
So if you don’t have a reserved seat make sure to sit in the non-reserved carriage (They are clearly marked).
There are two ways to reserve seats:
The first is to make an online reservation via the JR-EAST Train Reservation system. However, please note that some trains, such as local trains, sightseeing trains, and temporary trains, cannot be reserved online.
The second option is to apply for reserved seats at a station. You can do this at the JR Information Desk, the Green JR Ticket Counter (Midori-no-madoguchi), or by using the reserved seat ticket vending machine in major JR Hokkaido stations.

A 7-Day Itinerary for Exploring Hokkaido with the JR Hokkaido Rail Pass
Hokkaido is a stunning and diverse island in northern Japan, known for its scenic landscapes, hot springs, and delicious seafood. On our last trip here’s how we used the JR Hokkaido Rail Pass, to explore the island and all its beauty.
This was our 7-day itinerary for using the JR Hokkaido Rail Pass. it might be a bit rushed for some but does allow you to see some great things.
Note: By using the pass for this itinerary we saved 32,730 yen or about $300 US.
Day 2: Arrival and Sapporo City
- Arrive at New Chitose Airport and activate your 7-day JR Hokkaido Rail Pass
- Take a train from New Chitose Airport Station to Sapporo Station
- Explore the city of Sapporo, visit its famous Odori Park, and taste its delicious cuisine.
Day 3: Asahiyama Zoo
- Take the train from Sapporo Station to Asahikawa Station using your JR Hokkaido Rail Pass
- Visit the famous Asahiyama Zoo, known for its innovative enclosures and successful breeding programs
- After the zoo, explore the city of Asahikawa
Day 4: Wakkanai
